EasyUC for Cisco

Phone types: device classes and models 88xx/98xx

Which device types EasyUC distinguishes, which models the CUCM knows and how you switch a phone to another type.

EasyUC · Version 4.8.7

In EasyUC: EasyUC Cisco → Templates → Phones → Create NEW Phone Template → Phone types 88xx/98xx on this CUCM

What it is for

EasyUC assigns every device from the CUCM to a device class and shows a model image or an icon for it. In lists and in the user profile you can see at once whether a device is a desk phone, a conference phone, a softphone, an analog port or a device profile. The class determines which actions EasyUC offers.

For the Cisco 88xx and 98xx series EasyUC keeps a catalog of the supported models, including 8821 and 9821 (Wi-Fi), 8832 (conference) and 8875 (video phone). Before creating a phone, EasyUC checks whether the CUCM knows the phone type. If it is missing because a device pack or a service update is not installed, EasyUC rejects the creation with a clear message.

The card Phone types 88xx/98xx on this CUCM shows the state per model. With Convert Phone Type you replace a phone with another model and keep users and lines.

Prerequisites

  • License module cucm and an active CUCM connection.
  • For the phone types card: role ROLE_APP_LIST_PHONE_TYPE. It is included in ROLE_APP_CREATE_DEVICE and ROLE_APP_LIST_TEMPLATE. Without this permission the card stays hidden.
  • The card is located in the Create Templates dialog for phones. The menu item Templates → Phones appears in the classic template model.
  • For Convert Phone Type: role ROLE_APP_CREATE_DEVICE. The action is available for phones of the 6xxx, 7xxx, 8xxx and 9xxx series, not for device profiles.
  • For a new model: the CUCM contains the phone type. New models require a device pack or a Unified CM SU.

Step by step: check which phone types the CUCM knows

  1. Open EasyUC Cisco → Templates → Phones.
  2. Click Create NEW Phone Template. The Create Templates dialog opens.
  3. Click the row Phone types 88xx/98xx on this CUCM to expand the card. The collapsed row already shows the summary, for example “21 present” and “6 missing”.
  4. For each model, read the columns Phone type, Status on this CUCM, Templates of this type and Minimum version.
  5. If a model shows Missing on this CUCM – device pack or SU required, install the device pack or service update from the Minimum version column on the CUCM.
  6. Then click Check again. EasyUC reads the type list from the CUCM again. The time is shown under last checked.

Step by step: create a template for a new phone type

  1. In the CUCM, create a phone of the new type with a placeholder MAC address and one line.
  2. In EasyUC, open Templates → Phones and click Create NEW Phone Template.
  3. In the Create Templates dialog, search for the placeholder phone and create the template from it.
  4. Assign the template to a location and a package.
  5. Then delete the placeholder phone in EasyUC.
  6. In the phone types card, check that Templates of this type now shows at least 1.

Step by step: switch a phone to another type

  1. Open the user's profile and the Phones & Phone numbers tab, or the phone list under EasyUC Cisco → Devices → Phones.
  2. On the phone, click Convert Phone Type. In the phone list the action is in the Actions menu.
  3. In the Convert Phone dialog, check the details of the current device: class, name and lines.
  4. Select Location and Package.
  5. In the Create a new Phone area, select the Model and the Template. With Template 2.0 no template is needed.
  6. Enter the MAC Address of the new phone.
  7. If a phone with this MAC address already exists, EasyUC shows its lines and users. Tick Should EasyUC really use this phone for the current User? only if the device is to be taken over.
  8. Click Save. EasyUC creates the new phone with the number of the old one and removes the old device from the user's list.

Check the result and troubleshoot

  • Success when checking: the model shows Present and Templates of this type is greater than 0. A phone of this type can then be created.
  • “This phone type is not available on this CUCM. Install the device pack or Unified CM SU that contains it, or choose a template of another phone type.” The message appears at the Template field when creating a phone, in the wizard and when converting.
  • After a device pack has been installed, EasyUC rejects the type for about one more minute at most. The card can show the old state for longer. Check again updates it.
  • Cannot be checked (CUCM not reachable): the type list could not be read. In this case EasyUC does not block the creation. Check the CUCM connection.
  • “The phone types could not be loaded.” The query failed. Repeat it with Check again.
  • Success when converting: the new model appears in the profile with the same lines, and the old device is gone.
  • In the button layout, 98xx models show the number of buttons from the catalog: 2 on the 9811, 4 on the 9841, 6 on the 9851 and 9821, 8 on the 9871 and 10 on the 9861. Models without their own drawing appear as a neutral diagram.
  • The CSV import of the wizard recognizes the product name and the short form, for example Cisco 9841NR or 9841NR. The import does not recognize order numbers of the 98xx series such as DP-9841-K9.
