What it is for

A CUCM connection describes how EasyUC reaches a Cisco Unified Communications Manager: address of the publisher, AXL user, AXL version and, optionally, the voicemail server (Cisco Unity Connection). Each connection stands for one CUCM cluster. All work in the EasyUC Cisco area runs through the connection selected in the header.

From the address entered, EasyUC itself derives the addresses for AXL, the real-time service (RIS), Extension Mobility and the log collection. On saving, EasyUC signs in to the CUCM via AXL, reads the CUCM version and counts end users and phones. If a voicemail server is entered, its sign-in is checked as well.

Through Actions on a connection you reach all further settings of this cluster, for example naming rules, CDR, CUCM backup and CUCM change log. These entries have their own chapters.

Prerequisites

  • Sign-in as an administrator (ROLE_APP_ADMIN). Creating and changing connections is not assigned to any other role.
  • License with the cucm module. The Voicemail area in the form and most entries under Actions appear only if the license includes provisioning (provisioning).
  • An application user in the CUCM with AXL access. For the node cards on the dashboard, it additionally needs serviceability permissions, for example through the group “Standard CCM Server Monitoring”.
  • The CUCM publisher can be reached via HTTPS from the EasyUC appliance.
  • For voicemail: user, password and address of the Unity Connection server, and the voicemail number.
  • During initial setup, only one connection can be created. Further ones follow once the setup wizard has been completed.

Step by step: creating a connection

  1. In the header, select the EasyUC Cisco workspace.
  2. In the menu, open Administration → CUCM & Provisioning → CUCM Connections. The page is titled Manage CUCM Connections.
  3. Click Create at the top right. The Create CUCM Connection dialog opens.
  4. Under Alias, enter a unique name, for example Zentrale.
  5. In the CUCM area, select the AXL Version (11.5, 12.0, 12.5, 14.0 or 15.0).
  6. Enter the AXL User and AXL Password.
  7. Under AXL URL, enter the address of the publisher, for example cucm-pub01.intern:8443. If https:// is not specified, EasyUC adds the protocol; a path is discarded.
  8. Under Settings, select the Device Type: Phones, Device Profiles or Phones and Device Profiles.
  9. Leave Interne Durchwahl (Ziffern) (internal extension, digits; the label is German only) at 0, or enter a length of 2 to 10 if internal extensions are unique within the cluster.
  10. If required, set Can a user log in to multiple devices? (visible only if the device type includes Device Profiles) and Device Activation Service Enabled?.
  11. Select the Location Type: Normal or Custom Enduser Attribute. For Custom Enduser Attribute, additionally select the Enduser Custom Attribute and enter at least one range with From and To under Ranges.
  12. If a voicemail server is being connected: leave the switch in the Voicemail area on and fill in Voicemail User, Voicemail Password, Voicemail URL and Voicemail Number. Without voicemail, turn the switch off.
  13. Click Save. EasyUC checks the sign-in to the CUCM and to the voicemail server. On success, the dialog closes, the message Success appears, and the connection is listed with the enabled badge.
  14. Select the new connection in the header before you edit locations, templates or devices.

Step by step: updating a connection

  1. Open EasyUC Cisco → Administration → CUCM & Provisioning → CUCM Connections.
  2. In the row of the connection, click Actions. The Menu window opens.
  3. Click Update Connection. The Update Connection dialog shows the stored values.
  4. Change the fields you want. In addition to the create dialog, the Voicemail area contains the Voicemail Profile on Line field. The Location Type can no longer be changed here.
  5. Click Save. EasyUC signs in via AXL again and re-reads the version and the counters. On success, the message Success appears.

Step by step: disabling or enabling a connection

  1. Open EasyUC Cisco → Administration → CUCM & Provisioning → CUCM Connections.
  2. In the row of the connection, click Actions.
  3. Click Disable Connection. The change takes effect immediately, without a confirmation prompt. The badge in the Alias column changes to disabled.
  4. For a disabled connection, the menu contains only Enable Connection. Clicking it switches the connection on again.
  5. If the disabled connection was selected in the header, EasyUC switches to the next enabled connection.

Fields and options

Fields and options
Field / actionMeaning and use
AliasName of the connection in the header and in lists. Required, must be unique.
AXL VersionVersion of the AXL interface: 15.0, 14.0, 12.5, 12.0 or 11.5. Required. After saving, the list shows the version reported by the CUCM.
AXL User / AXL PasswordApplication user of the CUCM for AXL. Required. EasyUC checks the sign-in on saving.
AXL URLAddress of the publisher as a host name or IP address, optionally with port and https://. Required. EasyUC stores only protocol, host and port and appends the paths of the CUCM services itself.
Device TypeDefines what the connection works with: Phones, Device Profiles (device profiles for Extension Mobility) or Phones and Device Profiles. Default: Phones and Device Profiles.
Interne Durchwahl (Ziffern) (internal extension, digits)0 = disabled (default). With 2 to 10 digits, EasyUC also shows forwarders to the internal extension for E.164 numbers. Use only if these extensions are unique within the CUCM cluster. The value 1 is not allowed: “Bitte 0 oder eine Länge von 2 bis 10 eingeben.” (please enter 0 or a length of 2 to 10).
Can a user log in to multiple devices?Visible only for the device types with Device Profiles. Default: off.
Device Activation Service Enabled?Default: on. If the option is set, EasyUC offers the selection for automatic registration when desk phones are created (for example when copying or moving users and in automatic provisioning).
Location TypeNormal: locations are assigned through number ranges (default). Custom Enduser Attribute: locations are assigned through a custom end-user attribute of the CUCM. Selectable only on creation.
Enduser Custom AttributeOnly for location type Custom Enduser Attribute. EasyUC reads the attributes defined in the CUCM. Required for this location type.
RangesOnly for location type Custom Enduser Attribute. With Add you create further ranges, with rm you delete one. From and To are required and may contain only digits, optionally with a leading +. A range may comprise at most 1,000,000 numbers.

Checking the result and narrowing down errors

  • After saving, the CUCM column shows the version read and the counters. If values are shown there, the AXL sign-in works.
  • “Could not connect to CUCM server or username/password do not match”: the CUCM rejects the AXL sign-in or does not respond to AXL. Check the user, password, AXL version and the AXL role of the user.
  • “Could not connect to host”: the address cannot be reached from the appliance. Check the host name, port, DNS and firewall.
  • “This value should not be blank.” below a field: fill in the required field. With voicemail switched on, the user, password and URL of the voicemail server are required as well.
  • “You cannot have all connections disabled”: the last enabled connection cannot be disabled.
  • “You can add just one connection during install”: during initial setup, only one connection is possible.
  • If an entry is missing under Actions, the connection is disabled or the license does not include provisioning.
  • After a certificate change on the CUCM, queries fail until the new certificate has been accepted. See the chapter “Reviewing and accepting a CUCM certificate”.
